Laura Allen, BA, NCLMBT#1042,\u00a0 is the President of Sales & Marketing at \u00a0<\/span>CryoDerm<\/span><\/a>,<\/strong> a family-owned company located in Margate, FL that makes plant-based Pain Relief and Therapeutic Massage products.\u00a0She is also on the team of CryoDerm Educators<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

A graduate of Shaw University and The Whole You School of Massage Therapy, Allen began studying bodywork in 1993 and has been a licensed massage therapist since 2000. From 1998 to 2003, she served as administrator and instructor at The Whole You. From 2003 to 2016, she owned THERA-SSAGE, a multidisciplinary clinic offering chiropractic, massage therapy, acupuncture, esthetics, naturopathy, and nutritional counseling. Allen has been an Approved Provider of Continuing Education under the NCBTMB <\/a><\/strong><\/span>since 2002, offering classes in professional ethics, research literacy, business and marketing, massage therapy techniques, and training for those who want to be massage therapy instructors. She has taught classes across the US, Canada, and the UK.<\/p>\r\n

Allen is the author of numerous books, including Nina McIntosh’s The Educated Heart 6th ed<\/em><\/a><\/span><\/strong>, Plain & Simple Guide to Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork Examinations 5th ed<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/span>, One Year to a Successful Massage Therapy Practice 2nd ed<\/strong><\/span>,<\/em><\/a> A Holistic Practitioner’s Guide to Business<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/span>, and many others.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

Allen’s regular ethics column, Heart of Bodywork<\/em>, appears in Massage & Bodywork Magazine<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0 She has had numerous articles published in massage publications, including Massage & Fitness Magazine<\/a><\/strong><\/span>,\u00a0Massage Magazine<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, Massage Today<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, Massage & Bodywork Magazine<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, and the International Journal for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork<\/a><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n

Early in her career, Allen received a Community Service Grant from the American Massage Therapy Association<\/span><\/strong><\/a> for her work with people in comas and persistent vegetative states. She served as the Unit Coordinator Administrator for AMTA-NC for several years and was also in the House of Delegates. She acted as a site reviewer for COMTA<\/a><\/span><\/strong> for several years. Allen is a 2011 inductee into the Massage Therapy Hall of Fame<\/span><\/strong><\/a>. She was also named the American Massage Therapist of the Year at the 2011 American Massage Conference. From 2006-2011, she served on the North Carolina Board of Massage & Bodywork and was a delegate to the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards. Allen is an advocate for the evidence-informed practice of massage therapy and teaches and promotes research literacy. She is a Silver Award winner of the Massage Therapy Foundation Professional Case Report competition; her research study, The Use of Massage Therapy to Relieve Low Back Pain,\u00a0<\/em>appeared in the International Journal of Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork, the only peer-reviewed publication in massage therapy, and her study is indexed on PubMed.<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n

She is a founding member of the Alliance for Massage Therapy Education<\/a> <\/strong><\/span>and currently volunteers with the organization. She is also a founding member of the Society of Massage Archives<\/a>.<\/span><\/strong> The Society featured Laura on a recent podcast.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

Allen is also one of the founding members of The Massage Ethics Council<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>along with Dr. Ben E. Benjamin, Beverly Giroud, Nathan Nordstrom, and Cherie Sohnen-Moe. Established in 2023, we have published Guidelines for Standards of Care for the Prevention of Sexual Misconduct and Assault in Massage Therapy. Numerous free resources are available on our website.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Allen consults with massage therapists, massage and spa business owners and massage school owners\/startups, has created the curriculum of numerous massage schools, and has acted as an expert witness in trials concerning massage therapy since 2010. Allen resides in the mountains of Western North Carolina with her husband, James Clayton, and their two rescue dogs, Fido and Queenie. She is a singer, musician, and songwriter, has made numerous appearances in person, on public radio, public television, and appeared on several recordings, including a CD recorded with Hogwild, By the Light of the Moon<\/em> (1999), and Rise and Shine<\/em>, a music compilation recorded by massage therapists to benefit the Massage Therapy Foundation<\/strong><\/a><\/span>. She has also been a guest musician on numerous CDs by other artists.<\/p>\r\n

She enjoys playing music with her friends, reading, writing, traveling, cooking, and studying all things Irish.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n
