Allen started attending classes in bodywork in 1993 and became a Licensed Massage Therapist & Bodyworker in 1999, after spending more than 20 years in the restaurant business. Along with her husband, Champ, also a massage therapist, she is the owner of THERA-SSAGE, a clinic and educational facility in Rutherfordton, NC, offering massage therapy, chiropractic, nutritional counseling, aesthetic services, and continuing education for massage therapists and the public. She is a graduate of Shaw University and The Whole You School of Massage & Bodywork.

Allen has been an Approved Provider of Continuing Education under the NCBTMB since 2000, offering classes in professional ethics, business and marketing, massage therapy, and training for those who want to be instructors of massage therapy. She has taught classes all over the US, in Canada, and Europe. She also hosts many fine nationally- and internationally-known instructors annually at her education facility for continuing education classes. She is also the author of numerous books:

Allen is on the visiting faculty for the Obus School of Healing Therapies in Leixlip, Co Kildare, Ireland, and the Board of Advisors for the Asheville School of Massage & Yoga.

Allen started blogging on the Massage Magazine website about the politics of massage in 2007. Her blog also appears in Massage Today. She is also an advocate for the evidence-informed practice of massage therapy and promote research literacy, and a supporter of the Massage Therapy Foundation.

Allen resides in the mountains of Western North Carolina with her husband Champ and their two rescue dogs, Fido and Queenie. She is a musician and songwriter, has made numerous appearances in person, on public radio, public television, and  appeared on several recordings, including a CD recorded with Hogwild, By the Light of the Moon (1999). She enjoy playing music with her friends, reading, writing, traveling, cooking, and studying all things Irish.
